The SOE Software Team Discusses the Future of Elections and Voter Registration at Election Center Workshop in Minnesota
April 29, 2013 - SOE Software participated in the “Future of Elections and Voter Registration Workshop” on April 24 – 26 in Minneapolis, Minnesota. As stated by the Election Center, the future of American elections continues to be debated by policy makers and there is a concerted effort by many political and advocacy groups to mandate election processes. This workshop focused on how to serve voters well not only now but in the immediate future, keeping these legislative issues in mind. Some of the constructive discussion points included:
- Should the “cafeteria plan” be continued with options including absentee or mail balloting, in-person early voting, and multiple days voting? Should we go back to only Election -ay voting or convert to all mail elections? Or should we create an election season?
- What will voting equipment look like as jurisdictions buy new equipment during the next few years?
- Can technology be used in every segment of voting?

SOE Software Develops Application to Help Local Florida Community with Hillsborough County Supplied “Big Data”
April 17, 2013 - Supporting Hillsborough County, Florida’s Economic Development Innovation Initiative, SOE Software participated with Tampa
software developers in the Hillsborough County “Hack-a-Thon”. Held April 12th – 14th , this was s a local event that was organized by Hillsborough County to
encourage the area technology community to create applications that would benefit the citizens of Hillsborough County using County-supplied “Big Data”.
The participants competed in teams to come up with ways to use the data that were useful to either the County itself or local residents. In spite of
the name – “Hack-a-Thon” – this was an event intended to create, not destroy. The event was organized to encourage creativity in software development by giving
technologists access to large, publicly available databases with which to work and see what they could create to help the community at large. The team from
SOE Software created an application called HomeScout to help prospective homebuyers research the property and surrounding area they are evaluating. HomeScout
includes standard property valuation data as well as information on whether the property is in a flood zone or near sinkholes, the property’s school district,
proximity to emergency services, and may other data points of interest to homebuyers.
